Risks Involved * read this *
Risk is a factor in any business. But in farming, the risk is greater than in most businesses because it is totally subservient to the whims of mother nature. When you join a CSA, you are declaring the importance of both knowing where your food comes from and then supporting that grower. By paying up front for a portion of the harvest, a CSA member shares the risk with the farmer that a percentage of the crops might fail. This arrangement benefits the farmer because he is assured a steady income, even without 100% crop success. The CSA benefits the members because they are assured a steady supply of fresh produce, grown without chemicals. They can visit the farm where their food comes from. And they can see that their money is staying in the local economy.
Important Questions to Ask Yourself Before Joining
- Do we cook several meals at home during the week?
- Are we enthusiastic about occasionally trying something unusual from the garden?
- Will we be able to pick up our share during harvest season (it can be picked up by a friend when needed)?
- Are we willing to share the risks with the farmer that come with working with Mother Nature, e.g. lower production, smaller share quantities, due to insects or weather conditions?
